Powering down, yakka up: otahuhu powerstation

Discover how Yakka tackled one of New Zealand's most significant industrial demolition projects at the Otahuhu Powerstation. Our expertise in complex asbestos removal and large-scale structural deconstruction ensures safe and efficient project delivery, every time.

A monumental undertaking

The Otahuhu Powerstation project was a landmark for Yakka, showcasing our comprehensive capabilities. Our team successfully managed the extensive asbestos removal and demolition of both Powerstation A and B, including their associated condensers and cooling tower. Furthermore, we undertook the significant task of uplifting and processing a 1-metre deep concrete slab on grade, preparing it for backfill and establishing a robust hardstand across the cleared site. This project stands as a testament to our ability to handle large-scale, intricate industrial demolition with precision and efficiency.

Engineering complex solutions for safety and success

At Otahuhu, challenging scenarios spurred our innovation. We faced the complex task of removing asbestos roofing at a staggering 30 metres high. Beyond standard asbestos removal protocols, our team implemented a rigorous harness system combined with backup safety netting directly beneath all work zones, ensuring paramount safety for our crew. Additionally, the demolition of two 40-metre high chimneys required specialised techniques. Utilising our advanced crawler crane, we meticulously 'scarfed' the towers in sections, employing wire pull cables to carefully lower each piece. This methodical approach demonstrated our commitment to safety and engineering excellence.

Precision dismantling: the cooling tower challenge

One of the most intricate components of the Otahuhu Powerstation project was the dismantling of the expansive cooling tower. Our team meticulously executed this by employing a sophisticated cut-and-crane methodology. This involved using a crane to carefully cut and hoist out each of the 50 banks of 25-metre high cooling radiators. This precise operation minimised risks and ensured controlled deconstruction, highlighting our capability to manage and execute highly technical demolition projects. Choosing Yakka means partnering with proven industrial demolition experience.
