Restoring Purangi's resilience

In the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle, Yakka stepped in to bring stability back to Purangi, transforming challenges into robust solutions for the Coromandel community. Discover how we delivered a critical slip remediation project with expertise and precision.

Cyclone gabrielle's impact at purangi

Cyclone Gabrielle left a trail of significant damage across the Coromandel, and Purangi in Flaxmill Bay was no exception. The Waikato Regional Council engaged Yakka to address a critical road washout that severely impacted access and stability, presenting a complex challenge requiring immediate and expert intervention. Our task was to fully reinstate the damaged infrastructure, ensuring the safety and accessibility of the area.

Strategic remediation: yakka's approach

Our approach involved several key steps to ensure long-term stability and full reinstatement. We began by carefully removing uprooted pohutukawa trees, then benched down the slope to safely excavate the unstable slip material. A robust 1-ton rock gravity wall was then meticulously supplied and placed. Following this, we reconstructed the footpath and stormwater system, installed new safety handrails, and fully reinstated the road, all while expertly managing traffic through a single-lane control to minimise disruption.

Exceeding expectations: a stable future

The client, Waikato Regional Council, expressed immense satisfaction with the project's completion. The works were delivered on time and within budget, reflecting Yakka's unwavering commitment to efficiency and quality. This successful remediation not only restored essential infrastructure but also demonstrated Yakka's specialised ability to tackle complex civil engineering challenges, ensuring safety and resilience for the community. We pride ourselves on our adaptability and commitment to excellence in every aspect of our service.
