Founders Theatre: a complex demolition challenge
Discover how Yakka successfully tackled the high-profile demolition of Founders Theatre in Hamilton, showcasing our expertise in asbestos removal and complex project management. We pride ourselves on delivering innovative solutions for any challenge, anywhere in New Zealand.

Innovative asbestos solutions
A‑class asbestos abatement above auditorium — engineered access and airtight control
When A‑class asbestos was found in the auditorium ceiling void, Yakka designed and built a custom working platform for this confined, complex space. The platform enabled safe access for removal and formed a stable base to install airtight enclosures and negative‑pressure controls—ensuring compliant, secure handling of A‑class materials.

Overcoming high-reach challenges
As the project progressed, further asbestos was discovered in the auditorium walls and the underside of the stage roof sheets, situated 30 metres above ground. With a working platform already 5 metres below the sheeting, Yakka implemented a creative solution, engaging a crane with workers attached to static lines. This method allowed for the safe and efficient removal of these elevated materials, demonstrating our commitment to problem-solving and safety.

National capabilities, local expertise
The Founders Theatre project exemplifies Yakka's ability to adapt and develop effective solutions for complex and difficult problems, regardless of location. Our expertise in managing high-profile demolitions, including those involving hazardous materials like A-class asbestos, positions us as a leader in the construction industry throughout New Zealand. We are proud of our team's ingenuity and their capacity to deliver outstanding results even in the most challenging circumstances.
