Mastering complexity at Carlaw Park SV4
At Yakka, we thrive on intricate challenges. Discover how our expertise in A-Class asbestos removal and precise demolition paved the way for new developments at Auckland University.

A new vision for Auckland university
The Carlaw Park SV4 project involved a critical initial phase for Auckland University: the careful removal of A-Class asbestos from three buildings, totalling 2,500m², followed by their complete demolition. This extensive work was essential to clear the site for the construction of a brand-new Halls of Residence, a vital addition to the university's campus infrastructure.

Navigating complex challenges
One of the most significant hurdles was the A-Class asbestos located within the floor void on the first floor. This demanded a highly detailed methodology and meticulous execution to ensure all appropriate A-Class controls were installed and fully operational, adhering strictly to the Asbestos Removal Control Plan. Compounding this, the project had a tight programme which we successfully integrated into our work. Furthermore, the two-storey building's proximity to one of Auckland's busiest streets required comprehensive engineered design for temporary works and careful planning following the removal of the street-facing facade, ensuring public safety and minimal disruption.

Delivering on tight deadlines, safely
We are particularly chuffed with maintaining the extremely tight programme for this project. Our efficiency ensured that the site was ready for the new building's construction, keeping it on track for completion in time for the 2027 university intake. The tricky asbestos removal and subsequent demolition were completed successfully and, importantly, without any incidents, showcasing Yakka's commitment to safety and project delivery excellence. This project stands as a testament to our ability to handle high-stakes environments for commercial development clients and head contractors.
